In Shikoku, nine castles have been named among the 100 best castles in Japan, including Matsuyama Castle in Ehime Prefecture, Kochi Castle in Kochi Prefecture and Takamatsu Castle in Kagawa Prefecture. The Kotohira Shrine and the 88 temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage are some of the most famous historical sites in western Japan.
