The Setouchi Triennale 2016 summer season has started! Even more visitors are expected than the spring season, which was tremendously popular. The locations for the summer season include the seven islands (Naoshima, Toshima, Shodoshima, Ogijima, Megijima, Ohshima and Inujima), the Takamatsu port area and the Uno port area. Each venue exhibits new works created for this year, as well as works from the last two Triennale events. Food is another theme for this year, so enjoy it! Please be aware that the summer in the Setouchi area is extremely hot - be prepared to do battle with the heat when visiting the venues.
1. BE PREPARED FOR EXTREMELY HOT WEATHER
Expect strong sun and humidity in summer in the Setouchi area. You may be getting around the islands on electric bicycles and/or motor scooters, or you may need to queue up in the sun during the daytime, so have hats and parasols to hand. Other recommended items include sunglasses, towels and sunscreen. Last but not least, don’t forget to drink a lot of water: you may lose a lot of fluid due to the heat.
2. BE AT THE PORT AT LEAST ONE HOUR BEFORE THE FERRY DEPARTURE
Expect big crowds during weekends and holidays. Ticketing counters and boarding points for the ferries are different for each destination, and may be confusing for first-time visitors, so we highly recommend that you get there early to buy your ferry ticket. When you have your ticket, line up and wait for boarding to avoid missing the ferry. It often happens that passengers are not able to get a seat on the ferry during weekends and holidays.
3. THE LAST FERRY OF THE DAY IS SOMETIMES FULL
When it is crowded, the last ferry to Uno and Takamatsu can be full: it sometimes happens that people can’t get a ticket, so if you cannot afford to miss it, make sure to be there at least 30 minutes before departure time to line up. When the last boat is full, the regular ferries dispatch extra services to transport passengers left at the port, but these are not high-speed boats. It would be wise to make sure that you are familiar with alternative routes for getting back to Takamatsu port.
4. BOOK AHEAD, ESPECIALLY WHEN VISITING CHICHU ART MUSEUM ON NAOSHIMA AND TESHIMA MUSEUM ON TESHIMA
The Chichu Museum and Toshima museum are extremely popular and often have to restrict admissions. If you plan to visit them, book ahead via the website. You won’t need to wait for admission and will be able to use your time more effectively.

5. ENGLISH (AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE) SIGNS AND GUIDES ARE VERY LIMITED
Even the English version of the official guide book contains only limited information, including the maps and basic guides that are available from the official website. There are several English-speaking personnel at the tourist information office, but once you are on the small islands, you will find that there are few English speakers except for staff at the hotel and museum operated by Benesse. English food may not be available in restaurants and cafés. Be prepared to treat this as an adventure!
Finally, there are no trash cans for visitors on the islands, so make sure you bring all your trash with you when you come back to town. Please do say hello to the residents there. Show good manners and enjoy your Triennale experience even more!
