SETOUCHI TRIENNALE 2016: TESHIMA ACCESS AND TRANSPORTATION DETAILS

 (1126)

ACCESS TO TESHIMA

There are two ferry terminals on Teshima, one being Ieura Port and the other Karato Port. Artworks are located around these ferry terminals and also in the area called Kou, which is located on the opposite side on the island. The ferries connect the ports of Shodoshima, Naoshima, Uno in Okayama Prefecture and Takamatsu with a variety of routes. However, during the Setouchi Triennale, a nonstop high-speed boat to and from Takamatsu Port will be heavily crowded. As many would-be passengers will inevitably be left behind, especially in the case of the first and last boat, it may be wise to opt for more indirect routes. It is also worth noting that rather than taking a high-speed boat that has a small passenger capacity, it is more convenient to take a ferry with a larger capacity and on which you can take your bicycle with you. The ferry/ high-speed boat tickets will not be available until 30 minutes prior to departure time.

Must-see sights like the Teshima Art Museum and artworks are dispersedly throughout Teshima. To visit them, you can either walk or take a bus, or use a bicycle rental or motor bicycle rental. Using a bicycle rental is recommended so that you can enjoy the artworks at a leisurely pace. However, during the busy season of the Setouchi Triennale, weekends, successive holidays and summer holidays, rental bicycles may be fully occupied by 10:00. Therefore, it is preferable to make bicycle reservations or catch the first boat to Teshima. Fortunately, extra buses run every 30 minutes during the Setouchi Triennale, which makes it easy to travel around the island and finish appreciating the artworks within a day. If you want to do so more efficiently, options like a rental car and motor bicycle rentals are available. There is only one taxi available on the island.
